Builder: Hillgreen-Lane, 1962, Charles Hendrickson, 1999 Manuals: 4 Ranks: 54 Action: Electro-pneumatic chests Notes: In 1998 an F3 tornado hit St. Peter and caused enormous damage to the campus. The signature spire on Christ Chapel fell over and the inside of the chapel was pummelled with broken glass. The organ suffered damage, requiring replacement of the Great main windchest with a new slider chest, as well as certain other elements. As part of the building repairs, the antiphonal chamber was removed and repurposed, and remaining organ components were stored in the large organ chambers. The Hendrickson Organ Company, located just a few miles from the campus, was entrusted to do the work in continuation of many years of maintenance on this organ. Tonal changes made in the 1970's were largely retained, but some further changes were made. Octave unification on the manuals has been largely removed. The former Enclosed Great of just 3 stops now is part of the Solo division instead of part of the Great. Thus the entire Great is located in a contiguous location in the center, along with most of the Pedal. The console is now at the balcony rail, allowing for a larger singing choir and giving the organist opportunity to hear better balance with the organ and the congregation. (In the console's original location closer to the pipes, we used to tell student organists that if they could hear the congregation singing they were not playing loud enough!) The open grill behind the choir has been replaced with a reflective wall that helps the singers to hear each other and prevents curious fingers from reaching into the organ components. -- David Engen, former curator; 2017 |
